How We Help
HIV/AIDS Program - Kibwezi Integrated STI/HIV/AIDS Project (KISHAP)
This project focuses on information, education, and communication. KISHAP has these main components:
  • Training of peer educators on HIV/AIDS information and facts, education curricula, and discussion formats. Peer educators represent FARD to their local villages and community contacts. Their outreach targets community members of all ages, religions, and social stature.

  • HIV/AIDS Experiential Learning Project (HELP) trains teachers in the district critical skills and knowledge for implementing HIV/AIDS awareness programs within their school at the student and administrative level.

  • Training of community health workers (CHW) on counseling, care, support and management of HIV/AIDS victims and their families. CHWs provide service and support on HIV/AIDS-related issues to all community members affected by the epidemic. This includes those infected, those who know or love someone infected, those concerned about their health status, those at risk for infection, etc.

  • Establishing social/resource centers equipped with literature and video tape libraries on HIV/AIDS and other community development issues.

Income and Food Security Program - Bio-Intensive Agriculture (BIA) Project
Agriculture is the primary source of food and income in the Makueni district. FARD trains local farmers in techniques of organic farming as a means of promoting good nutrition and income security for local households. The BIA project provides support to participating farmers by providing skilled and knowledgeable volunteers to assist in optimal crop development. The project imparts information and skills such as double-digging techniques and irrigation strategies. It also includes education on basic business management skills and promotes the development of farming cooperatives and community markets that are in the best interest of the local farmer.

Future Programs
Our future programs will expand on these existing initiatives. We are planning for direct programs such as an AIDS Orphan Support Project, Youth Resource Center, Streetboy/girl Apprenticeship Project, and MESA-FARD Alliance Project (agricultural training in the USA for local farmers). All of these projects are designed to offer direct benefits to participants. We are also planning to continue our organizational development by incorporating a foreign volunteer program and building our network of global collaborators.
