InterConnection Chile
InterConnection opened a distribution point in Santiago, Chile in May, 2009. The first shipment of 349 computers arrived in April to start the project. InterConnection Chile will promote the responsible use of electronic products, especially PCs. It will distribute low-cost PCs to underserved communities with the goal of creating opportunities through digital inclusion. Future plans will be to establish an in-country electronics reuse and recycling center and create a sustainable model for computer reuse that can be shared in other countries.

Microsoft donated 167 computers to InterConnection Chile to help launch the center. InterConnection Seattle added 182 of its refurbished computers to complete the load.

The first 100 units went to Cooperative Copeumo A Chilean NGO that will use the computers to support a national telecenter program.

Other distribution partners are:

Banco Estado Microempresa: This is the National Bank of Chile's Microcredit program. The bank will offer InterConnection PCs to microcredit recipients.

CDI Chile: Provides technology support to NGOs in Chile and will offer InterConnection PCs to their clients.

Association of Active Telecenters in Chile: Telecenters throughout Chile will offer InterConnection PCs to their users.

Zoltner Consulting, is managing outreach and operations in Chile.

Computer Reuse Bill Becomes Law

Computer Reuse BillOn April 29, 2009 Washington State's governor Christine Gregoire signed HB 1522 into law. The law allows computer collectors to perform basic repairs on computers received through the Washington State Ecycle program. Repairs were not allowed under the previous restrictions in the program. InterConnection supporters worked hard to ensure the passing of the law. We are very pleased it passed since it ensures more computers will get reused. Testing and sourcing fees for Pentium III desktops are now $25 per unit and Pentium IV are $50 per unit.

Complete details of the computers we offer, our refurbishing process, and case studies from past computer recipients can be found in our new Computer Details Document.

"The Crushinator" has Arrived
We can now provide on-site hard drive destruction thanks to our new hard drive destruction machine.  We prefer to wipe hard drives with software so we can reuse them. But some of our computer donor clients request the highest level of data security possible, which is hard drive destruction. To meet their request, we purchased a machine that crushes hard drives.  We call it The Crushinator.

Hard drives are placed inside the machine and a conical punch inside the unit delivers a staggering 12,000 pounds of hydraulic force, causing catastrophic trauma to the hard drive’s internal platters. This process is in accordance with various government regulations and industry standards (HIPAA, FACTA, SOX, PCI DSS, etc.).

Expedia and Hines Hold Employee Computer Drives

On April 21, for Earth Day, we carried out an employee computer collection event with the online travel company, Expedia, in Redmond, Washington. We collected nearly 100 computers.

The next day, April 22, we carried out two employee collection events with Hines property management. Events were held at their Safeco building in downtown Seattle and at a building on Olive Way.

We thank these companies for providing their employees with an opportunity to reuse their surplus computers by donating to InterConnection.
